ITINERARY:
Day
1 - Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Travel through the Fleurieu Peninsula, arriving at Cape Jervis
to board the SeaLink ferry across Backstairs Passage (45 minute
trip) to Penneshaw. Whilst crossing, it is not uncommon to
have an escort of local dolphins that can be viewed from the
dolphin deck on the vessel.
First
stop is Rob's Shearing, where you will witness and learn how
to shear a sheep. Travel to Pennington Bay, one of the Island's
stunning beaches or Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery before
having lunch and visiting Seal Bay. At Seal Bay experience
a guided walk along the beach amongst the Sea Lions! Then
travel to the white sand dunes of the Little Sahara and have
some fun on the sand boards and toboggans before we arriving
at your exclusive accommodation at Vivonne Bay Eco-Adventures.
Here you have the opportunity to spend some free time kayaking
on the Harriet River or boogie boarding and surfing (included).
Alternatively, you can have a swim or snorkel, take a self-guided
walk along the property's tracks, go trail bike riding or
simply kick back on the "best beach in Australia" as it was
recently voted. There are plenty of complimentary activities
to keep you occupied before and after your BBQ dinner. As
darkness sets in you can take part in a nocturnal wildlife
guided walk. (LD)
Day
2 - Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
On the way to Flinders Chase National Park, get up close to
more wildlife at Hanson Bay Koala sanctuary. You will
arrive at Remarkable Rocks ahead of the crowds to clamber
over and marvel at the spectacular coast and seascapes. We
head around to Admirals Arch at Cape Du Couedic where we watch
the resident fur seals frolic in the ocean or sun bake on
the rocks. After lunch at the Rocky River Visitors Centre,
we have an option of several walks (seasonal choice/guide
discretion) before hitting the spectacular North Coast and
its many idyllic beaches (seasonal). If time and weather permits,
several stops may be made en route to Penneshaw where you
can purchase dinner before your departure back to Adelaide.
(BL)
South
Australia: is the fourth largest state - four times the
size of the UK and slightly larger than Texas - and offers
all the experiences synonymous with Australia in one accessible
area. Except for Adelaide (home to 1 million of the 1.5m residents),
South Australia is sparsely inhabited and is the country's
driest state. The terrain ranges from the craggy mountains
of the Flinders Ranges (the southern reaches begin only 220kms
out of Adelaide) to the vast expanses of isolated, desert
outback broken by the fertile wine growing areas, including
the world-renowned Barossa and Clare Valleys. Just offshore
is Kangaroo Island, a wilderness and wildlife haven.
Kangaroo Island:
is world-renowned as a place to see native Australian
wildlife in its natural habitat. There are several reasons
for this, firstly, more than half the island has never been
cleared of vegetation, with about one third conserved in National
and Conservation Parks. In addition, foxes and rabbits were
never introduced onto the island, ensuring the integrity of
the uncleared bushland and the presence of abundant wildlife,
much of which is uncommon or extinct on mainland Australia.
On your trip, you may get to see the Kangaroo Island Kangaroo,
Tammar Wallaby, Short Beaked Echidna, Southern Brown Bandicoot,
various species of possum, Cape Barren Geese, dolphins, penguins,
whales (seasonal) and the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.
The island also has flourishing populations of the rare Australian
Sea Lion, New Zealand Fur Seal and Australian Fur Seal, which
are all native, plus koalas and platypus (though the latter
are pretty hard to spot!), which were introduced but still
survive there.
